Dear Prospective Nursing Students,
Some of the most important actions to take prior to Nursing School
- Work as a Tech or CNA.
- Perform the best that you can on your prerequisites
- Job shadow in a hospital, clinic, or nursing home
Becoming a Tech or CNA
Becoming a Tech or CNA is very important. You will learn basic patient care such as how to take vital signs, how to transfer patients, and basic hygiene care. Learning these skills will help you perform better as a nurse. You will understand what it takes to be the Tech/CNA and respect that job a lot more.
Importance of prerequisites
When taking prerequisites for nursing school put your best effort in to each class. I know that it can seem like a waste of time when you are doing it but there are several of those classes you will use later when you practice as a nurse. During my prerequisites the Computer Applications class I took I thought was a waste of my time. Honestly, I can tell you that I use the several of the programs I learned about in the class almost daily in my nursing practice.
Importance of Job Shadowing
Take the time as a Highschool or beginning college student to job shadow. Job shadowing can give you an idea of what to expect when you become a nurse. Shadowing a nurse won’t show you everything but it can give you an idea of what a nurse does in an actual day. It can either encourage you to continue on your journey or help you realize that this job is not for you.
Conclusion
In conclusion, my number one piece of advice is take the time to become the Tech or CNA. Getting this license and actually working in the field will help you understand what you are getting in to. Becoming a Tech or CNA first will help you to appreciate that job once you become the nurse. Remember every job is important and just because you become the nurse does not mean that you are above doing the jobs that are most commonly done by the Tech or CNA. Teamwork makes the dreamwork!
